Many people get "the blues" from time to time, especially following losses such as the death of a family member, the loss of a job or a divorce. If they're lucky, once they've worked through the grieving process, their mood slowly lifts and they begin to look forward to living once again. However, some people seem unable to shake themselves out of their sadness and depression. They may not even know why they became depressed in the first place. These people likely have an illness called major depressive disorder.

Major depression affects about 9.4 million people in the United States alone within any given six-month period. One of every 5 women and 1 in 15 men will suffer from major depression in their lifetimes. Depression is a complex medical illness. Each case is unique, but most people get better more quickly with therapy and medication. Despite the disorder's prevalence, the good news is that about 80% of people who get the right treatment do improve.

Citalopram Hydrochloride is one medication that has helped more than 30 million people get relief from their depression.
